Celebration at the Fitzroy Learning Network

The Architects for Peace Pro bono team was delighted to be invited to a BBQ held recently at the Fitzroy Learning Network in celebration for the completion of their renovated kitchen and staff room.

The Fitzroy Learning Network (FLN) is a not-for-profit Neighbourhood House, offering a range of services, support and training courses for newly arrived refugees and migrants.

FLN approached Architects for Peace after they received a grant from the Department of Planning and Community Development in 2009 which allowed them to refurbish their facility, of which a new kitchen was their priority. We were happy to assist as we recognised that their old kitchens did require upgrades and the project was for the benefit of the community. Kalli, the A4P pro bono coordinator for the project at the time, then met and discussed the initial brief with staff at FLN and arranged for the advertisement of an Expression of Interest for the provision of pro bono architectural service.

Nick Bamford from Bamford Godfrey & Associates Pty Ltd promptly responded to our EOI. The A4P pro bono team was impressed with Nick’s experience and background and FLN was keen to engage Nick as their architect.

With a limited budget, Nick provided thoughtful and cost effective design solutions where he aimed to retrofit and reuse the existing materials and joinery wherever possible. In addition to producing schematic designs, Nick continued to assist on a pro bono basis for the entire duration of the project. To Colleen, the Executive Officer of FLN, Nick is the ‘Saviour of the project’. This sums up their gratitude for Nick.

Likewise, FLN is appreciative of the services provided by the team from Galligan Builders, who too went beyond what they were originally engaged to do. In the words of Colleen, ‘it was a pleasure to work with these highly skilled, helpful and friendly builders’.

Even though the renovation had taken longer to complete than originally anticipated, due to various factors and constraints affecting the schedule, FLN has always been complementary of the contributions and efforts from Nick and the team from Galligan Builders. Most importantly, everyone loves and enjoys the new spaces.

On the night of the barbeque, the pro bono team was honoured and very excited to be given a tour to the bright new kitchen and staff room, as well as to see that Nick and Paul from Galligan Builders have not only formed wonderful professional relationships but have also become good friends with the staff at FLN.

We sincerely thank Nick and Galligan Builders for their efforts and congratulate all for this very successful outcome. Colleen has also very kindly written us a testimonial which can be found here.
